Bear Over Bait

Bear hunting over bait is conducted the last week in August and first and second weeks of September.  Hunters booking with us will find economical bear hunting with good success rates from our Lodge about 70 miles from Greenville, Maine.

This is really a wilderness location, and far from the pressure of other hunters. We bait an area over 430 square miles to spread out harvest and reach the highest amount of bears.  Baits are set up in well scouted proven locations.  We take advantage of the full amount of baiting time allowed by Maine Law prior to the arrival of hunters and opening of our take season.  This establishes a consistent feeding pattern for resident bears and exposes the bait site to the greatest possible number of ranging bears who then add the location to their frequented stops.  Our outstanding record of consistent success proves the merit of our methods.

We provide all transportation to and from stands as well as preparation of your trophy.   Speaking of stands we use primarily ladder type stands for the safety and comfort of our guests.  We generally focus on the evening hunt and guests can fish or just relax in the mornings. The hunt price includes all food and lodging for the entire hunt.  Folks arrive Sunday afternoon and have a big dinner with us.  The hunt runs Monday through Friday.  Hunters then depart on Saturday morning.

When planning your bear hunt, don't hesitate to ask potential Outfitters questions concerning the following specific information.

  • With Russell Pond Outfitters you will be transported to and from your bait site each day.  Ask any potential Outfitters whether or not you will be required to use your own vehicle to get to your baits.  Remember, bear hunting camps are often remote (Ours is!) and this may mean having to drive 40+ miles on dirt roads every day.  Consider flat tires and gas when evaluating the cost of the hunt.

  • We provide pre-setup tree stands that work with our bait sites. Many bear Outfitters do not provide stands or will advise you to bring your own if you want to get off the ground. Experienced hunters know the advantages of hunting from stands set up in advance. If your desire is to hunt from a ground blind we will be happy to accommodate you with baits specifically set up taking advantage of terrain to conceal the hunter and his scent - just let us know.

  • At Russell Pond we welcome Bowhunters.  Bow stands are set up for an average shot of 15 yards. Stands are positioned in relation to the bait so that it forces the bear to present a good quartering shot.

  • You will be fed better at Russell Pond than you are at home.  We realize that is a big claim to make - but we have heard it from so many of our guests that we confidently believe it.  Each morning our hunters are served a full cooked breakfast: Eggs and potatoes, Homemade French toast or pancakes with bacon, ham or sausage. A sample of the weeks main courses may include: Roast Beef, Turkey with dressing, Ham, homemade Meatloaf, Lasagna, and stuffed Cabbage. Fresh baked rolls, potato or pasta, Homemade Soup or salad and vegetable are served with main meal.  Desserts featured include fresh baked pies, cake, cobbler and our famous Russell Pond Pineapple upside-down cake. We are very proud of our meals at Russell Pond - ask anyone who has hunted with us.
